Suitability of Plant Growth Environments for the Ecological Utilization of Abandoned Marine Barges : A Case Study of the Floating Garden in Yeongdo-gu, Busan

Abstract

This study assessed plant growth suitability in a floating garden built on an abandoned marine barge in Yeongdo-gu, Busan, by comparing it with an invillage garden as a control. Plant growth status was evaluated using Soil Plant Analysis Development chlorophyll meter values and maximum changes in plant height and canopy width. Growth environment indicators included soil salinity, soil moisture content, soil temperature, planting surface temperature, and satellite-based land surface temperature. The mean chlorophyll meter value was 17.116 in the floating garden and 38.686 in the control garden, and the maximum increases in plant height and canopy width were 18 cm and 5 cm, respectively. Eight introduced species in addition to the planted species were observed, indicating seed influx and initial establishment despite limited substrate conditions and spatial isolation. The mean soil salinity was 0.429 dS/m, and the mean soil temperature from September to October was 26.13°C, showing higher values than the control site. Satellite based land surface temperature maxima were similar between the two sites at 45.4°C and 45.6°C, whereas the minimum value was approximately 5°C higher in the floating garden, suggesting buffered cold-season thermal conditions. Overall, these findings show that an abandoned marine barge-based floating garden can support plant growth and may complement limited terrestrial green space. Further work is needed to select suitable plant species, control salt accumulation, and accumulate long-term monitoring data.

본 연구는 해상 폐바지선 상부에 조성한 해상정원의 생태적 활용 가능성을 검토하고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 부산광역시 영도구 해상정원을 대상지로, 인접 내륙 마을정원을 대조군으로 선정하여 식물 생육 상태와 환경을 비교 분석하였다. 생육 상태는 엽록소 함유량 지표(SPAD)와 초장 및 초폭의 변화를 통해 평가하였으며, 생육환경은 토양 환경(염도, 수분함량, 온도)과 지표면 온도(LST)를 중심으로 검토하였다. 분석 결과, 해상정원의 평균 SPAD 값은 17.116으로 대조군(38.686) 대비 낮게 나타났으며, 조사 기간 내 초장과 초폭은 각각 최대 18 cm, 5 cm의 성장을 보였다. 특히 해상정원에서는 식재종 외에 8종의 이입종이 관찰되어, 격리된 해상 환경에서도 외부 종자 유입과 초기 활착이 가능함을 확인하였다. 한편, 해상정원의 평균 토양 염도는 0.429 dS/m, 9월-10월 평균 토양 온도는 26.13°C로 나타나 대조군 대비 상대적으로 불리한 조건이 확인되었다. LST 분석에서는 두 대상지의 최고 온도는 각각 45.4°C, 45.6°C로 유사하였으나 최저 온도는 해상정원이 마을정원보다 약 5°C 높게 나타나 저온 조건에서의 열환경 차이가 확인되었다. 이상의 결과는 폐바지선 해상정원이 육상 녹지를 보완하는 대체 녹지 기반으로 기능할 수 있음을 시사한다. 다만, 지속 가능한 관리를 위해 환경 특성에 적합한 수종 선별과 염류 축적 제어 방안이 마련되어야 하며, 장기적인 모니터링을 통한 데이터 축적이 요구된다.
